I am outraged.
We are all aware that in Minneapolis, Renee Good, a U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by someone acting under the authority of the federal government—by an individual described as an ICE agent. Regardless of the details still under investigation, one truth is already clear: this should never happen in a democracy that claims to value life, justice, and the rule of law.
The loss of a human life at the hands of the state is not something to be explained away with press releases or rehearsed language about “protocols” and “perceived threats.” When the government kills one of its own citizens and tries to gaslight us about what we have seen with our own eyes, the burden is not on the public to be patient or quiet—it is on the government to be transparent, accountable, and just.
I am angry because this did not happen in a vacuum. It happened in a climate where fear is being normalized, where enforcement is being escalated without sufficient guardrails, and where force is too often treated as a first response rather than a last resort. It happened in a moment where federal power feels increasingly distant from the people it is supposed to serve.
Let me be clear in my perspective: no policy goal—immigration or otherwise—justifies reckless or lethal force against civilians. No administration gets to hide behind bureaucracy when a life is taken. And no democracy remains healthy when its people are asked to accept state violence as collateral damage.
This is not about politics. This is about humanity.
Justice demands more than internal reviews and carefully worded statements. Justice demands an independent, transparent investigation. Justice demands accountability—not only for the individual involved, but for the systems, leadership, and policies that made this outcome possible. Justice demands that federal agencies operating in our communities be subject to real oversight and real consequences when lines are crossed.
And accountability must extend upward. Leadership sets tone. Leadership sets priorities. Leadership sets limits. When those limits fail, responsibility does not stop at the scene—it travels all the way to the top.
We cannot continue to normalize the idea that government authority comes with immunity from consequence. We cannot accept a future where citizens fear those sworn to protect them. And we cannot remain silent when the power of the state is turned inward, with deadly results.
I grieve for the life lost today. I grieve for the family whose world has been shattered. I grieve for 3 children whose mother was taken away. And I grieve for a country that keeps asking its people to absorb trauma without demanding change.
Outrage is not enough—but silence is unacceptable.
We must demand justice.
We must demand accountability.
And we must demand a government that remembers who it works for—and who it is sworn to protect.
