Statement on the Elimination of SNAP Benefits
By Dr. Melvin J. Brown
The elimination of SNAP benefits is not merely a policy decision — it is a moral failure. At its core, SNAP has never been about charity; it has been about dignity. It ensured that families could feed their children, that seniors could live with some measure of stability, and that working people who still struggle to make ends meet could do so without humiliation.
To strip away this vital lifeline is to turn our backs on the most basic human responsibility: to care for one another. It is a stark reminder of how disconnected some have become from the realities of poverty, hunger, and inequity in our communities.
When leaders choose austerity over empathy, when they prioritize budgets over people, they perpetuate cycles of struggle that schools, social programs, and local communities are left to confront alone. As an educator and as a human being, I know firsthand that hungry children cannot learn, struggling families cannot thrive, and communities built on scarcity cannot flourish.
We must decide who we are — and who we want to be — when it comes to our shared humanity. The elimination of SNAP is not just a political act; it is a reflection of the values we either uphold or abandon.
